As gas prices continue to rise, more and more people are starting to purchase hybrid vehicles, such as the Toyota Prius, for their unbeatable fuel economy. Although hybrids have been on the market since 1999, many people still aren’t that familiar with how they operate and how they differ from a traditional, non-hybrid vehicle.

Unlike a conventional vehicle, a hybrid vehicle uses multiple forms of energy for propulsion. They still house a fuel tank and combustion engine, but they are coupled with an electric motor and battery pack. The electric motor will draw power from the battery to give the acceleration an extra kick. However, hybrids are not the same as electric cars. Hybrids primarily use gasoline as the main energy source but utilize electric components to collect and reuse energy that would normally go to waste in a stand vehicle.

How do hybrids get better fuel economy?

When a hybrid car is stopped in traffic, special software shuts off the engine. When the driver releases their foot from the brake pedal, the software then signals the car to automatically start back up again. Not only does this method increase gas mileage but cutting down on idling, but it also cuts back on tailpipe emissions.

Another cool ability that a hybrid has is that it can absorb energy from the momentum the car generates while coasting downhill or slowing down. In standard cars, the energy in this momentum would be wasted as heat in the brakes.

For the last ten years, Allstate has been analyzing the driving habits of cities across the United States to determine who were the safest drivers as well as the not-so-safe drivers. Every year, they take the information they’ve gathered and create a report that includes list of cities with the safest drivers. Any guesses as to who made the number one spot? In 2013, the city with the safest drivers was Fort Collins, Colorado.  

If you’ve followed the report for previous years, it shouldn’t be too surprising since Fort Collins has occupied the number one position for past three years. For the last nine years, they’ve ranked in the top ten. The average frequency of accidents between drivers in Fort Collins is 28% lower than the national average. In Fort Collins, the average time lapse between accidents is 14 years! Quite impressive to say the least.

Dishonorable Mention goes to….

For some of us, it may be more beneficial to know which city has the worst drivers so that we can avoid it as best as possible. Sadly enough, our nation’s capital has the worst drivers in the country where on average drivers are involved in an auto accident every 4.8 years. Way to represent, Washington D.C.  Maybe Fort Collins can teach our capital a thing or two about safe driving.

Self-driving cars are all the rave right now in both the tech world and the auto world. Google is paving the path right now with their smart car that can self-navigate by using GPS data, sensors, and an onboard computer.

But instead of making cars smarter, what if we made roads smarter instead? Volvo recently conducted a research project where they built a roadway fitted with magnets underneath the pavement. The idea behind this project is that cars equipped with sensors would be able determine their position on the road. Volvo believes this is a safer solution than autonomous vehicles because of a lower margin of error for positioning inaccuracies.

Though innovative, the idea isn’t financially feasible. To upgrade the roads with this technology, it would cost approximately $39,362 per mile. With nearly 40 million miles of roads, that’s a whopping $157.5 billion! Not to mention the cost of maintenance.

Another thing to take into consideration is that since the roads are public owned and operated, governments would be in charge of constructing these new roadways. Currently, 32 percent of the nation’s streets are in poor or mediocre condition. If the government struggles to keep our current road systems maintained, successfully building magnetic roads doesn’t look too promising.

Sorry Volvo, it’s a good idea in theory, but it’s just not practical at the moment. But in the future—maybe. We’ll just have to see what’s in store for us.

The federal government places a lot of consideration into airbags when determining the safety rating of a particular vehicle. Research indicates that airbags play an import role in reducing fatalities related to car accidents and automakers are quickly starting to develop more innovative airbag designs.

As an attempt to reduce the occurrence of limb injuries that occur during accidents, automakers are starting to install knee airbags under the steering column and glove box of their vehicles. These airbags are designed to cushion the blow when the knees fly forward ruing an accident.

General Motors developed a new airbag that was introduced in some of their 2013 models. This front center airbag is positioned between the front rows seats after being deployed on the right side of the driver’s seat. It is designed to provide restrain for the driver and to keep the driver and passenger from colliding with each other during a collision.

More consideration is also being put into the safety of backseats passengers as well, which tend to be children and the elderly. Ford recently created inflatable seat belts for that purpose. Pedestrians aren’t being ignored either. Volvo developed a pedestrian airbag that deploys upon impact when a person is hit by the car.

Accidents will always happen, but through the implementation of new airbag technology, the number of accident related fatalities can be greatly reduced.
